Sometimes we think that just because something is normal and apart of our everyday lives, it’s okay. But in reality, there are so many things that we have come to accept as normal, that are actually quite destructive. Like smoking. Smoking used to be commonly accepted. Until many years later, people and their non-smoking loved ones were dying of cancer.
The Environmental Working Group wrote an article in 2015 that states that women on average use 168 chemicals on their skin, every single day (1). This article also states that federal regulations have barely changed since 1930 regarding personal care products. The skin is the largest organ in the body we know it can absorb (into the bloodstream) much of what we put on it. In 1984 there was a study published in relation to the safety of drinking water, and the study proved a role that hadn’t been taken into account prior, the absorption of volatile organic compounds by the skin. This study showed the skin absorbs 29-91% of the VOC dose, averaging 61%. (2) It is important to understand too, that different chemicals and compounds are absorbed at different rates, and others, like silicone additives, will not absorb at all.
Researchers are working hard to identify the safety or lack there of, of many chemicals, parabens, phthalates, etc. used in personal care products. Another study showed that in 18 out of 20 breast cancer patients, there were parabens found in the fatty tissues (3). We don’t know if the parabens present caused the cancer or not, but they do have weak estrogen-like properties. Another article publishes in 2016 states that Johnson and Johnson must pay $72 million dollars of damages for a cancer death linked to talcum powder found in their baby powder and shower to shower (4).
I think that there is a lot we are trying to uncover around the safety in personal care products. I believe that measures need to be taken by us, the consumer to keep ourselves safe and healthy and to better understand the benefits of preservative and chemical free skin care. If you are looking for a great resource on learning more about ingredient safety, I recommend the EWG website.
